Coming up on the 80,000 kilometer mark on my 2017 Q5 and trying to decide whether I should do a transmission service now or wait a bit longer, the manual says it's sealed for life but my independent mechanic is insisting I get the fluid and filter changed as preventative maintenance. I know ZF who actually makes the 8 speed recommends service at 80k to 120k depending on driving conditions, and given our climate and traffic here I'd say we definitely fall under severe conditions. The dealer quoted me nearly two thousand just for a fluid change which seems steep for what's essentially an oil change with expensive fluid, but I also don't want some random garage using the wrong spec ATF and causing more harm than good. I've been reading up on what proper servicing entails on http://www.auditransmissionrepair.ae/ and they emphasize how critical it is to use the exact correct fluid and follow the right fill procedure with the transmission at a specific temperature, which apparently a lot of general garages skip. What interval are you guys actually following for your ZF boxes and is there any truth to the idea that changing old fluid on a higher mileage transmission that's never been serviced can actually cause problems, or is that just an old wives tale?
